We care for the well-being of our community

GRI 3-3; 413-1; 203-2

We invest 1% of our profits in promoting health in the communities where we operate. In 2022, we invested 2.4 M€ in community projects. Fundación Sanitas is the mechanism through which we care for the well-being of our environment, promoting health and social transformation as essential elements of positive change.

Fundación Sanitas

Over 20 years ago, Fundación Sanitas was created with the firm commitment to promote health and social transformation through research, the inclusion of people with disabilities and the recognition of medical teaching. Inclusive sports and the promotion of the excellence of the best healthcare professionals are the two pillars on which its actions are based, as well as the development of digital tools that favour the dissemination of information regarding healthier lifestyle choices.

Inclusive sport

Inclusion for everyone by means of healthy competition.

The joint practice of sports between people with and without disabilities contributes to giving children with disabilities the same possibilities as others to access physical education and, therefore, to a high-quality and healthy life, while enjoying a shared experience and social inclusion.

Inclusive Sport in Schools (DIE)

This program is now in its 11th annual edition and has been held in Madrid, Ibiza and Extremadura. It was created by the Cátedra Fundación Sanitas de Estudios sobre Deporte Inclusivo (Fundación Sanitas Chair of Studies on Inclusive Sport, CEDI) with the aim of promoting the values of self-improvement, respect and empathy that inclusive sport promotes from an early age in schools. Since then, 337 schools and 46,072 students have already participated.

Pillars

Senior-level Inclusive Competitions

In 2022, several senior-level inclusive championships were held, in which top-level athletes with and without disabilities competed in teams, including table tennis for the second year running, badminton and the triathlon. The participants were awarded prizes during the Inclusive Sports Night ceremony.

These competitions came about as a legacy of the 1st Inclusive Games, putting into practice the inclusive regulations that were created for the celebration of these games.

CESA Inclusive

Since 2018, at Fundación Sanitas we have been promoting inclusive sport at the Higher Council of Sports school championships by holding various competitions with the same characteristics as both conventional and adapted events.

In 2022, nine inclusive championships were held: track and field athletics, badminton, wheelchair basketball, cross country, judo, swimming, rugby, table tennis and triathlon.

A total of 574 participants took part in all competitions, including athletes with and without disabilities.

Real Madrid Foundation: inclusive and adapted soccer and basketball campus.

In 2022, we renewed our commitment at the 13th annual edition, and organised inclusive activities in which 60 employees and their families participated.

Agreement with CEAR

At Fundación Sanitas we are convinced that a healthy planet is not possible if it is not fair, and that the issue of refugees is one of the greatest challenges we face today.

For this reason, Fundación Sanitas and the Comisión Española de Ayuda al Refugiado (Spanish Commission for Refugee Aid, CEAR) have joined forces to provide comprehensive health care for people who have been displaced against their will and have been forced to leave their homes. The agreement is based, fundamentally, on providing mental health care and emotional well-being, as well as oral and dental care completely free of charge in several Sanitas Dental clinics.

75 refugees have already signed up to the initiative over the course of 2022. Because access to healthcare is a fundamental starting point for them to start rebuilding their lives.

Agreement with the Fundación Recover

At Fundación Sanitas, we believe that access to healthcare should not be limited by borders and we have signed an agreement with the Fundación Recover to improve access to healthcare for more than 1,300 pregnant women in Cameroon. These mothers-to-be receive all the support they need to improve their quality of life and ensure the survival of their newborns. We have offered them access to prenatal tests and provided them with information and training on recommended treatments and practices during pregnancy with the aim of improving their and their babies’ quality of life.

This is another step towards achieving SDG 3, which calls for improving maternal and child health to reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100,000 live births and reducing neonatal mortality to at least 12 per 1,000 live births by 2030.

Agreement with the Fundación Alentia

Thanks to this agreement, they have been offered professional assistance in various areas, especially in the field of mental health. These young people have the company’s services at their disposal both in person at the centre of their choice, and by telephone and video consultation. Since the beginning of the program, 25 young people have received psychological treatment, in which 8 professionals from Sanitas Hospitales and the Sanitas Health Promotion Service (SPS) have participated in more than 40 sessions, and another 16 have received study grants.

Spanish Business Council for Sustainable Development of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).

We are a founding member of this organisation, which was established in 2021. It is a consultative body made up of the presidents and CEOs of Forética’s sponsoring members and is honorarily chaired by H.M. King Felipe VI. Its mission is to convey a message of business leadership in sustainability, share trends, challenges and solutions, and project its vision and strategic recommendations to achieve sustainable development in the environmental, social and governance (ESG) fields.

Sanitas S.A de Hospitales Patient Associations

Some of the most noteworthy are: Asociación Madrileña de Pacientes Anticoagulados & Cardiovasculares (Madrid Association of Anticoagulant & Cardiovascular Patients) together with which we have developed Hemodent (a tool to improve the quality of life of anticoagulated patients), Asociación Española contra el Cáncer (Spanish Cancer Association) to provide emotional support and guidance to patients and information on healthy lifestyles and prevention, and Autismo España (Autism Spain) to improve care for patients with ASD in Sanitas hospitals.
